Why does oil come out of the DSG vent at all when using Launch Control or in vehicles with enhanced performance?
- During normal driving, the pressure in the transmission is moderate → there is hardly any oil mist coming from the vent.
- However, as soon as you use Launch Control or drive a TCU tune with higher clutch pressure (e.g., HPerformance Stage 1 with transmission software), the hydraulic pressure in the mechatronic system increases dramatically (often >20 bar).
- This pressure forces a fine mist of ATF oil out through the mechatronics vent hole (the small black tube at the top of the transmission).
- The mist then settles in the engine compartment → oily grime everywhere, especially on the intercooler, intake, underbody, etc.
- In extreme cases, liquid oil can even leak out and drip down (a common occurrence in many 400–600 hp Golf R / S3 / TTRS models with aggressive launch control).
What exactly does the milled HP DSG catch tank do?
- It is connected directly to the original vent on the mechatronics unit.
- The oil mist condenses in the tank → the oil collects at the bottom.
- Our catch tank has a return line → the separated oil flows back into the transmission in a controlled manner (no oil loss!).
- Result: The engine compartment stays clean, there are no oil leaks, and the transmission retains its full oil capacity.
